Note: According to the 1860 census of Trimbelle Twp., Pierce Co., Wisconsin, James, 44, born in New Hampshire, was a farmer. Lliving with him was his daughter (presumably), Sarah, age 14, born in Maine; and his son (presumably), Leander, age 20, born in New York. By 1865 James had moved about 90 miles to Winona, Minnesota, and married Eunice (Babcock) Taggart (see Minnesota Marriages, 1849-1950). Living with them in the city of Winona in the 1870 census was Louisa A. Taggart, age 16, born in Pennsylvania (his stepdaughter). James, age 53, born in New Hampshire, was listed as a carpenter. By 1880 there is a Jas. M. Davis, age 64, born in New Hampshire, a farmer, and living alone in Albion, Jackson Co., Wisconsin (about 180 miles from Winona). Not much is known of James before 1860, but there is a James M. Davis, age 33, listed in the 1850 census of Monroe, Waldo Co., Maine, who may have been our James because living with him was Leander, age 10, and "Sary" (although the penmanship looks more like 'Lory" and her age is listed as 12).
