    Sex: M
Birth: 24 Feb. 1713/14 in GERMANY
Death: 28 July 1791 in Silver Spring Twnsp., Cumberland Co., PA
    Note:
    Note:

Henry and Elizabeth arrived in Philadelphia, Sept. 30, 1754 from Palatinate of Wurtenberg on ship Edinburgh. They arrived with 160 passengers. The ship record shows that Daniel and Conrad Langsdorf also arrived with Henry. Henry's name appears in the Allen township tax list for the first time in 1762 and then in 1763, 64, 65, and 66. he appears in the East Pennsboro list for the very first time in 1767. It is recorded that Henry Longstaff (probably Longsdorf) deeded two of his 150 acres of land to elders Christian Albert, Michael Dill and John Reynicks of the Dutch Lutheran Church or Congregation of East Pennsborough Township, Cumberland County, Province of Pennsylvania on March 2, 1771. The deed included all buildings and improvements at a cost of five shillings sterling. This land was to be used as the location of a church building (which was called the Longsdorf Church) as well as a burial ground. The burial ground is known to this day as Longsdorf Cemetery. The cemetery was enclosed by a stake and rider fence. A man who committed suicide by hanging was buried outside the fence. The burying of such a person in a graveyard in those days was not permitted. Since that time the cemetery has been enlarged. The remains now rest near the center where the grave is unmarked and the man's name forgotten. The church continued for about 70 years and was torn down and the congregation split into three churches. The church that remained and is still there today is St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in New Kingston, PA. There is a church at Mechanicsburg, PA and 12 adult Longsdorfs were members at one time according to the communion record.
There was a depot named Longsdorf in Penn Twp., south of Dickinson/Centerville. There is a cemetery at Centerville too. Depot was named for Dr. William H Longsdorf who lived at Centerville.

JACOB M. LONGSDORF, one of the prominent retired farmers owning a pleasant
and comfortable home in Mechanicsburg, Cumberland county, was born April 9,
1836, in Silver Spring township, Cumberland

    554 CUMBERLAND COUNTY.

county, son of George and Elizabeth Longsdorf.

George Longsdorf was born in 1800, in Silver Spring township, and belongs
to one of the county's fine old families, whose ancestral history will be
found elsewhere. He was the father of eight children: Margaret S.; William
    Zeigler, deceased; Henry, deceased; Emanuel; George A., deceased; Jacob M.;
John, deceased; and Sarah, wife of John Kast, of Nebraska.

Jacob M. Longsdorf passed his youth on the farm, and attended the district
school in the old log school-house in Silver Spring township, during the
winter seasons, until his eighteenth year, and he remained with his father
until his marriage. After this event he settled on a part of his uncle Adam
Longsdorf's farm, the old Longsdorf homestead in Silver Spring township,
operating that farm for five years, and then moved to New Kingstown, where he
remained until 1870. In this year he removed to the borough of Mechanicsburg,
where he bought a small tract of ten acres, and there engaged in a nursery
business, growing and handling nursery stock extensively and successfully
until 1898. At this time he disposed of his stock, but retained his little
farm, on which is a good dwelling, barn and numerous sheds. Mr. Longsdorf has
been a very industrious man, and has met with excellent success in all of his
    efforts.

On Dec. 22, 1859, Mr. Longsdorf married Mandilla Williams, of Silver Spring
township, born in York county, Nov. 10, 1836, daughter of John W. and
    Wilhelmina L.

    Trindle Springs Cem

This cemetery is located behind a building on State Road, north of Trindle
    Road, Route 641.

Jere Zeamer transcribed these stones around 1895, his account is undated. His
material was transcribed by Helen Harmon in 1955. These stones were read by
Elizabeth Landis Carson in the fall of 2001. Some were very difficult to read
and may be wrong. If your spelling or dates differ, please go and check them
yourself. There were several stones that I could not read. ? indicates letter
or number I could not read. There is a pile of about 20 tombstones beneath a
tree in the back left section, I did not attempt to move any. I have gone over
Zeamers records, and for the stones that I did not find, I used Zeamers data.
[I have added some other material & genealogy and that is all in brackets, like
this.] There are some references to the "Kober book" which is "A Limited
Genealogy of the Kober-Cover-Coover Family and Cognate Families", by Melanchthan
Coover, published in Gettysburg PA in 1942.
I have sectioned the cemetery and added section letters to help locate stones
for anyone who wishes to find a particular stone. Section A is behind the
former church and extends back to an imaginary line going from the large obelisk
beside the road across left to near the tree. Section B is the back part of that
area. The separation between A & B is not straight. Section C is to the right
of A & B, Section D to the right of that and the newest section, E, is on the
    far right.
Abbreviations used: d. means died, w/o means wife of, s/o means son of, etc.
There is an index at the back for maiden names and other names not alphabetized.

St. John's Cemetery, behind Peace Church [also called Friedens Kirch], Hampden Twp,
Cumberland Co., corner of St. John's Road and Trindle Road.
Jere Zeamer copied the transcriptions in 1905. Elizabeth Landis Carson copied
the stones in 2001. In some cases when a joint stone has replaced individual
stones, the full dates from Zeamer are included.
If I have not found the stone, I have used Zeamers data & noted [Zeamer]
In 1999-2000, Boy Scout Billy George copied the stones and drew the locations
of the stones in the oldest section, directly behind the church. I have called
that Section A. His work is on file at the gift shop at Peace Church and the
Cumberland Co. Historical Society. Locations in A use his grave numbers.
Names of the living have been removed, except husband's names.
[Comments by me are in brackets; many of my genealogical additions are from the
book, "A Brief Biographic Memorial of Joh. Jonas Rupp and Complete Genealogical
Family Register of his Lineal Descendants from 1756 to 1875," by I. Daniel Rupp,
published by L.W. Robinson, Phila, PA]
If two dates follow a name, birth and death, only one date, b or d will indicate
birth or death, s/o means son of, d/o means daughter of, w/o wife of, etc.
I have given the section location of the stones and suggest that you check the
stones of your ancestors as some of them are hard to read and may be wrong.
The sections, separated by roads, are lettered like this with St. John's Road at
the top and Trindle Road on the right

Text: Their first homes were small, rough log buildings, usually erected near a stream. To such a small stream called Mohawskunk, which ran through the southwest part of what is now Silver Spring Township , came Michael Hawk, Henry Longsdorf, and some others about 1763. It was the custom of the Germans to quickly build a schoolhouse and church. The settlers built a low, crude log house for this purpo se on the farm of Henry Longsdorf. This was the beginning of St. Stephen Lutheran Church. Services were probably conducted by the schoolmaster or by Henry Longsdorf who had a book of sermons which w e may have read at the church service until such time as the church secured a pastor.

Text: In those early days the whole territory was missionary ground. The Lutherans were occasionally served by ministers from the eastern part of the state. However, John Conrad Bucher, a self-proclaime d minister, baptized the children of Henry Longsdorf. John Bucher served from 1763-1769 at Carlisle after which he went to Lebanon, PA. There was no evidence to indicate that he ever preached at th e Longsdorf church.
