"Bethuel Covalt, Sr. was an early and important member of the Tonoloway church. He came beforre the church and was baptized sometime before 1816, at which time he was a trustee of the church. In August of 1819, the church ordained him as a ruling elder. He also served as the clerk from November of 1801 to October of 1804. He appears on the tax lists of bethel township as early as 1779. He owned 150 acres then, but appeared with 200 accres by 1781. His will probated in 1822, mentions his children: three sons, bethuel, Isaac, and Jacob; and three daughters, Martha, wife of Jacob Hill; Rachel; and Sarah, wife of Matthias (sic) Cowll. Bethuel Covalt, Sr. was a public servant as well, serving as a justice of the peace in 1787 and for many years following."
