Notes from Gladys Kliewer about her father living in Canada:
    ______________________________________________________
Edward Kliewer went with a friend to Canada, Edward taking his mule team. The two men slept in the box car with the mules and almost froze to death. They covered their teams with their blankets and stayed close to the mules to keep warm. They ran out of food before they got to their destination.

Since it was planting time in Canada, Erma Pauline Charlotte Stahl, made her wedding dress in Kansas and went to Canada to marry Edward on May 26, 1915.

Their first son, Orland Henry Kliewer was born February 4, 1917 and is buried at Drake, Saskatchewan, Canada. When Orland was born "Little Grandma" (Eva Witt Kliewer) went to help. Erma May Kliewer (Nuss) was born May 31, 1918 in Canada. In October 1920, Iris Ella Kliewer (Miller) came into the world in Canada.

Deciding to return to Kansas they had quite a large auction sale on Wednesday, November 10, 1920. Iris was a baby in arms when they headed back to Kansas. Emma said Erma was such a little girl and was good during the traveling. Erma only spoke German but was quick to pick up English.

We believe the friend that went with him to Canada was a Mr. Harms, because he had friends or family there. Emma was asked by Gladys why they returned to the states: Emma said she didn't like it there... so cold and the winters were so very long.

Story is: Edward Kliewer took the first team of mules to Canada and people from all around came to see those strange looking horses. Edward was good to his live stock and loved his team and was real "spiffy" as a young man. He had one of the best buggie and team in the County.
