    Great Forrester and Governor of Flanders; son of Baldwin I; m. Princess Alfrith, dau. of Alfr ed the Great of England; father of Arnulf. A dynamic ruler, he is remembered in history a s a vigorous opponent of the Normans and as the builder of the walls of Bruges and Ypres. H e is also credited with laying the foundation of political liberties in his country by appoin ting 12 of his principle vassals as a council of state. After his death in 918, his possessio ns were divided bet. his 2 sons, Arnul and Adolphus. [House of Forrester, p. 45]
