Name: William Norris "Bill Bugler" JOLLIFF
Birth: 1823 in Illinois
Death: AFT 1880 in Prob Washington Co, IL
Change Date: 20 JUL 2010
WILLIAM NORRIS was born in 1823 in Ill. (named for his great-grandfather, William Norris).
His father died when he was 5 years old, and his mother died when he was 11. He was raised by his uncle Col. James Jolliff. His brothers, Randolph and James, were raised by their uncle, Green DePriest. All 3 of them moved to Missouri.
William & his brother Randolph were living in Oregon Co, Mo. in 1851, where William was a minister.
By 1854 he was back in Illinois and married to Margaret Louiza Pace (I cannot find a marriage record in Illinois for them), but they soon moved to Missouri again.
In 1856 their sister, Elizabeth also moved to Oregon Co. with her husband, James Willard (whose brother Martin also moved there)
Randolph bought 120 acres April 15, 1857, 200 acres in Sept 1859. William bought 80 acres April 15, 1857 and 240 more acres Jan 1859. They both paid cash for the land.

He was in the Civil War and was called "Bill Bugler" the rest of his life because he played the bugle in the army. Don't know which side of the War William was on. His brother Randolph was on the Confederate side from Missouri, and his brother Elijah Jr. was on the Union side from Illinois. Perhaps he went back to IL when the War broke out, as some of his cousins did.
After the War he and his family stayed in Washington Co, IL where they lived for 23 years (which makes me think he fought for the north).

His place of death is unknown, but all of his children ended up by about 1900 in Oregon County, Missouri.
NOTE: Since William was a common name in the Jolliff family, 3 relatives had nicknames to tell them apart: Bill Bugler, Bill Bunter (William Norris, Jr), and Bill Muck (nephew of William Norris, Sr., son of James Erasmus).
Probably children Mary, James & Randolph died young. His granddaughter, Nancy (Perkins) Green said, "Mother (Della) had 3 brothers, Lige, Bill & Dock, and 3 sisters, Mat Anderson, Lou Speck and Sarry Massey."
