Calvin was a Confederate soldier in the Civil War. He fought at Wilson's Creek in Springfield, Mo. During the battle the Confederate soldiers had to retreat. Calvin was riding a mule as he crossed Wilson's Creek. His mule safely jumped the creek, but he saw many other men and horses who didn't make it and were lying in the creek, so he credited that mule to saving his life.
He was a sergeant in Co, H, Fristoe's Regiment Missouri Calvalry. Prisoner of war, May 11, 1865, paroled at Jacksonport, Ark, June 5, 1865. Enlisted Thomasville, age 30, blue eyes, dark hair, fair complexion, height 6', born Kentucky.

The War split many churches in southern Missouri, mostly the Methodist churches were split over loyalties for the south and the north. Brown helped build Park Chapel near Rover for the southern-sympathizing Methodists. Redburn Church was for the Northern Methodists. Park Chapel later became a Congregational Church. (It was located north of Rover on the ridge east of M Hwy.)
