Note: Obit (West Plains Quill, Nov. 18, 2002): "Max Cowens services Wednesday -- Funeral services for Max Wayman Cowens, 59, Rover, will be 2 pm Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2002, in the Rose chapel of the Robertson-Drago Fuenral Home of West Plains. Mr. Cowens died 3:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov 17, 2002, at him home. He was born June 12, 1943, at rover, the son of Walter D. and Mabel Towe Cowens. On Dec. 23, 1969, he was married at Dodge City, Kan., to Doris R. Tepe. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Cowens was an active member of Woodside Lodge No. 327, Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, Thomasville, and held almost every office in the lodge during his years of faithful service. He had been an active member of the Rover Volunteer Fire Department, having served as a board member and assistant fire chief. Mr. Cowens was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, Rover. Survivors include his wife, Doris Cowens, of the family home; four children, Jeff Acton and wife, Chanda, Cimarron, Kans; Brenda Perry and husband Dewayne "Arkie," and Rhonda Ball and husband, Jim, all of West Plains, and Kenton Lewis and wife, Tammy, Clark; seven grandchildren, Colten Acton, Dustin Perry, Tonya Ball, Vanessa Ball, Kayla Lewis, Kyle Lewis and Kenlee Lewis; three brothers, Ray Cowens, Rover, Roger Cowens, Mammoth Springs, Ark., Dennis Cowens, Detroit, Mich; three sisters, Amy Lou Dickinson, Melvadale, Mich,. and Shirley Sue Tyler and Judith Ann Bates, both of West Plains; one brother-in-law, Harold Tepe, Spearville, Kan.; one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Kimminau, Dodge City, Kan; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and seven brothers, Bill, Jimmie, Bobby, Jack, John, Charles and David Cowens. Memorial contributions may be made to Riverways Hospice, Rover Volunteer Fire Department or Masonic Lodge No. 327 and left at the funeral home. The body will lie in state at the funeral home from 3 p.m. Tuesday until service time. Masonic Rites will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with family receiving friends until 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Jolliff Cemetery with military honors provided by the Missouri Military Funerals Honors Program and Veterans Honor Guard of West Plains."
