In documents she was listed as ?Anna? but perhaps the family called her ?Nancy? as a nickname.
Anna BAUMAN, daughter of Daniel & Elizabeth Bauman of Gilford township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. (Daniel may have been the Daniel Bauman who emigrated to Pennsylvania from Germany in 1751 on the ship ?Drake? from Wirtenberg or Duke of Wirtenberg.)
Nancy was born in 1752 and raised near Philadelphia. She could read & write German but could only speak English. Joseph, by self-study, learned to speak, read & write English.
At some point her family moved to Gilford twp, Franklin County in south central PA, probably near Chambersburg (it was Cumberland County then. Franklin did not become a county until 1784).
She married Joseph Lindesmith in Franklin Co May 3, 1772. Their first son, Daniel was born there, then in 1774 they moved to near Berlin, PA.
Joseph served during the whole Revolutionary War. He was a bugler & fifer, and bore arms. He was also sometimes Washington's barber. Nancy ran the farm while he was gone. There were no children born from 1775 thru 1778, so Joseph must have been away with the Army. He evidently made some trips back home because son Jacob was born Jan 1779 and son John was born Aug 1781, while the Surrender of Yorktown happened Oct 1781.
