1865 Census: Gausdal, Oppland, Norway: Peder Olsen (29, born in Gausdal); Beret Hansdatter (wife, 28, Gausdal); Karoline (6, Gausdal), Olaus (3, Gausdal), Hanna (1, Gausdal).

1895 MN Census: Polk County (now Pennington): Peder O. (57, Norway); Berit H. (60, Norway); Tobias (18, Norway)

1900 Census: Richbury Township [sic], Red Lake County [now Pennington], Minnesota: Peder (Apr 1838, 62, married for 39 years, born in Norway, emigrated in 1887, naturalized); Beret (Oct 1834, 6 children, 6 surviving, born in Norway, emigrated 1887); Tobias (Apr 1877, single, born in Norway, emigrated 1877); Carey (listed as a boarder, born in May 1883 in Illinois, father born in Norway, mother born in Minnesota); and Carey?s daughter Clara (born April 1900 in Minnesota). This Carey is almost certainly Peder?s step-granddaughter (son Olaus? stepdaughter) and Clara would eventually be raised as Olaus? ?adopted? daughter.

1905 MN Census: Peder O. (67, Norway); Berit (75 [sic], Norway); Tobias (22, Norway)

1910 Census: Smiley Township, Pennington, Minnesota: lists Peder (72) and Beret (79) as residing with their son Tobias (33, head of household) and his family (Maria (25), Melvin (3), and Bertha (1 and 3 months)

Immigration Records: Peter O. Stene files a ?Declaration of Intention? to become a U.S. citizen between 1888-1892 in Polk County. It appears he became a citizen after Red Lake County was formed from Polk County.

Death Certificate: Peder O. Stene was 74 with cause of death being 'cardiac insufficiency' aided by 'old age.' Birthplace: Norway. Date of birth: October 28, 1830. Date of death: February 20, 1911. Name of father: Ole Loftusea [maybe Lofthus-eie?] Maiden name of mother: don't know.

Note: Tobias Stene signed both of the certificates. Beret died February 20, 1911 and Peder died less than three months later on May 11, 1911. What's interesting about the information on these certificates is that Lofthus-eie is where the Torkelson/Anfinson families also came from. Maybe the two families knew each other in Norway and became neighbors in America for that reason.

Homestead Certificate #10321, Application #14970 Filed in Crookston, Minnesota ?pursuant to the Act of Congress approved 20th May, 1862, to secure homesteads to actual settlers on the public domain and the acts supplemental thereto, the claim of Peder O. Stene has been established and duly consummated in conformity to law for the lots numbered two, four and five and the South East quarter of the South West quarter of Section Eighteen in the Township one hundred and fifty-three North of Range forth-two West of the Fifth Principal Meridian in Minnesota containing one hundred and sixty-three acres and ten-hundredths of an acre.? Signed on August 25, 1900.

His application was made in July 1892. He declared he was head of a family and had declared his intention to become a citizen. He said he was born about 1837 in Norway and emigrated to the U.S. landing in the port of Chicago in May 1887. He was granted citizenship in July 1898. His witnesses for the application were John Benson who testified that Peder had a log house, stable, granary and 50 acres, all valued at $500. John Johnson was a second witness, stating the same. Peder testified on his own behalf that he was a naturlized citizen in 1898 having resided on the land prior to July 12, 1892. He was the head of a family with a wife and six children.

Obituary: ?Press? 26 May 1911: ?Peder O. Stene, who died May 11th at the home of his son, Tobias Stene, in the town of Smiley had been a resident in that place for the last 22 years. He was born in Norway in 1837 and was thus at the time of his death 74 years of age. The cause of his sudden death was heart failure. He was buried at the Greenwood Cemetery beside his wife who preceded him but a few months, having died at an advanced age on the 20th day of last February. This couple leaves to mourn them two sons and three daughters, namely: Mrs. A. Odegaard, O.P. Stene of Funkley, Mrs. Frank McPhee of Grand Forks, Mrs. O. T. Anfinson [Torkelson], and Tobias Stene of this vicinity. The departed were highly respected pioneers in their community.?

From 1910: ?Tuesday evening, December 27th, the neighbors of Mr. and Mrs. P. O. Stene, residents of the town of Smiley, met at the Stene home to help them celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Stene, aged respectively 73 and 80, were married December 27th, 1860. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Odegaard and Benny Odegaard, Mrs. and Mrs. G. O.
