From Pennington County History (1976), submitted by Marie Peterson Gustafson: ?Gustaf Otto Gustafson was born on October 11, 1868 in Varmland, Sweden to Gustaf Svenson and his wife Johanna. There, he received his Christian training and elementary education. At the age of 17, Otto went to Stockholm where he worked in a boiler factory. He served honorably in the King's army. In 1891 Otto, his parents and brother, Willie, immigrated to the United States and came to the St. Hilaire area where Otto's brother, Charles, was already established in farming in Rocksbury Township .Otto worked on farms in the area and at the sawmill in St. Hilaire. In 1895, he filed a homestead in the ?Fraction of Smiley.?
Ida Marie Anderson was born in Vastergotland, Sweden, on February 2, 1860, to Nickolas and Mia Lisa Anderson. There she received her Christian training and elementary education and grew to womanhood. These two young people met in Stockholm, Sweden, became acquainted and engaged.
In 1891, Ida immigrated to the United States and worked as a servant to a wealthy family in New York until the spring of 1893 when she came to Crookston, Minnesota. There Ida Marie Anderson and Gustaf Otto Gustafson were married in 1893. They rented a farm in Sanders Township where Hildur was born. They lived there until the fall of 1895 when they moved to Rocksbury Township. There Gust was born and in 1896 the Gustafson family moved to the homestead. Another daughter, Esther, was born there.
The privations were many and advantages few for the homesteading pioneer families. Gust and Hildur tell of their father cutting the winter supply of hay for the cattle with a scythe and raking by hand.
Until the well was drilled in 1910, it was necessary to chase the cattle to a nearby lake and break the ice for them so they could get water in the winter time. To get a supply of safe water for the family, rain water was boiled in winter. Ice was cut and hauled from the river and kept in the ice house .This was used during the summer to retard spoilage of food.
Drainage ditches and roads were at first nonexistent. These were dug or built by men who operated dredges or by the farmers who used oxen and scrapers.
A log structure served as a schoolhouse in District #221 and the school term was of five months duration. Some of the early teachers were Maggie Rose, George Netteland and Caroline Netteland. The annual basket social and the Christmas program were the two big social events of the school year. In those days, young people were known to walk many miles to participate in the festivities of the basket social and all the members of the family in the district came to the Christmas program which was always special. The schoolhouse was also used as a house of worship until St. Pauli Church was built in 1901. A new schoolhouse was built in 1915 by T. S. Iverson, a local carpenter.
G. O. Gustafson served on the school board in District 221 for several years and on the Smiley Township board for one term. He and his wife were both very interested in the church and its work.?
