3 County People Die in Collision
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hogquist and Son Killed Near City
A Pennington county farm family was wiped out with appalling swiftness late Wednesday afternoon in the head-on collision of their car with an automobile transport tractor-trailer rig about five miles southeast of the city on U.S. 59.
killed instantly in the crash were Oscar Hogquist, about 65; his wife, Myrtle, 56; and their adopted son, Loren, 27. They were returning to their home about eight miles southeast of the city about 5 p.m. Wednesday when their car and a McKee car transport form St. Paul, driven by Lawrence Golden of St. Paul, collided about a half mile north of the Hazel cut-off. The accident occurred on a straight stretch of road under conditions of perfect visibility.
According to the physician attending Golden, he suffered a fractured knee-cap and fractured vertebrae, cuts and abrasions. He was hospitalized here and underwent surgery last night. The nature of the back injury suffered by Golden was not classified as serious by the doctor.
Exact cause of the crash is as yet undetermined. The case is still under investigation by the highway patrol and Golden is being questioned this morning, but no information was available shortly before press time.
The impact drove the hood and engine of the tractor into the interior of the car almost to the [illegible] of the front seat, pinning Hogquist in the wreckage. Mrs. Hogquist and Loren were thrown clear, both considerably mutilated by the impact.
Hogquist?s body was so badly jammed into the wreckage the twisted metal had to be cut apart before he could be removed. A large crowd quickly gathered to view the gruesome proceedings but traffic was kept flowing smoothly by the crash scene by city and county law enforcement officers who were sent to the crash to help the highway patrol.
Hogquist is survived by a brother, John, rural Thief River Falls. Mrs. Hogquist is survived by two brothers, Henry and Alvin Dahl, of this city; and by two sisters living elsewhere, while Loren is survived by a brother and sister, whose names were not available [Vernon and Adeline].
