FRANCIS BRADLEY FAMILY by Joseph Bradley (typescript pages at Gaston County
Public Library, Gastonia, NC and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Library,
    Charlotte, NC)

(This is what Joseph Bradley has said about James Bradley, but I have not
proven his contention of Welsh ancestry as yet, nor his place of death)

James Bradley 1720-1796 was a patriot, who with unfailing loyalty supported the
cause of Independence. He was born in Wales, died in Bourbon County, Kentucky.

Elizabeth Pelham Bradley 1726-1788, his wife, conducted a hospital for sick and
wounded soldiers. She was born in England, died in Maysville, Kentucky.

They lived near Charlotte, N.C. and had three sons and two daughters. Their
son, Captain James Bradley, fell at the Battle of Camden in Gate's defeat.
Their son, John, was captured by the Tories at Charleston and died on board a
prison ship. Their property was taken by the British and their condition would
have been much wrose had it not been for the courteous General Marion.

The left margin is cut off on my copy but the children listed look to be:
    James
    John
    Francis (1743-1780) m. Abigail Alexander
    Rebecca m. Robert W. Finley
    Esther m. Isaac Price

Joel S. Russell, 1272 Woodbridge Crossin Dr., Chesterfield, Mo. 63005, wrote
me (B.Petty) over the Internet the following:

    First Generation -
Francis Bradley wrote his will in Lancaster County, Pa. in 1735 and it was
proven in Chester County, Pa. in 1738. He mentions his wife Rebecca, a
granddaughter Rebecca Bradley, and the following children (order as appears in
    Francis's will):
    1. Henry Bradley Sr. lived in Lancaster and York Co. Pa; b. c. 1705; d. 1777
    2. Ann Bradley
    3. Francis Bradley
    4. Marie Bradley
    5. James Bradley

    Second Generation -
Henry Bradley Sr. appears first in Lancaster Co. Pa. but by 1740 was living in
York Co. Pa. He appears in several land transactions and received at least
three land warrants from the Penns. His will was written in 1776 and proven in
1777 York Co. He identifies the following children:
    1. Elizabeth Bradley, b. c1727, married Isaac Alexander; they had a son
    Henry Alexander
    2. Joshua Bradley, b. c1730, married Jane Ayre (Ayres)
    3. Henry Bradley, Jr. b. c1733, estate administered in 1790 in York Co. Pa.

    Third Generation -
Henry Bradley Jr. lived in York Co. Pa. Very little is known about him, however
he signed a Power of Attorney in 1780 appointing Benjamin Alexander as his
attorney. This Power of Attorney stated that Henry Bradley's sons, Elijah and
Joshua, were to be remvoed fromt he custody of James Bradley in Mecklenburg
Co., NC and that the boys should be apprenticed out to learn a trade. In 1778
the County Court of Mecklenburg Co., NC had appointed James Bradley as guardian
to the orphan children of Henry Bradly, John McKnitt Alexander and Francis
    Bradley signed as securities.
    Known children:
    1. Elijah Bradley, b. c1766; he mved back to York Co. Pa.
    2. Joshua Bradley, b. 1769, m. 1796, Cabarrus Co. NC to Nancy Gardner

    Fourth Generation -
Joshua Bradley was born in 1769 in York Co. Pa. How he and his brother got to
Mecklenburg Co. NC is unknown. He married Nancy Gardner in Cabarrus Co. NC in
1796. They moved to Sumner Co. Tn. in 1797. There were other Bradleys who also
lived in Sumner Co. Tn, but their relationship is unknown. In 1817 Joshua moved
his family to Jackson Co. IL. where he remained unitl his death in 1839. This
was one of the early pioneer and prominent families of Jackson Co. Il. and
Bradley Township is named for them. His known children were:
    1. James Henry Bradley b. 1797, d. 1866
    2. Mark Bradley, b. 1799, d. 1833
    3. Richard A. Bradley, b. 1802, d. 1859
    4. Benjamin Franklin Bradley, b. 1804, d. 1870
    5. Isaac Ambrose Bradley b. 3 Mar 1806, d. 11 Apr 1879
    6. Elizabeth Bradley, b. 1810, d. c1885
    7. William Bradley, b. 1814, d. 1887

Joel continues - I believe that Elijah Bradley was apprenticed to Edward Irwin
(or Erwin), and taht Joshua was apprenticed to James Gardner (his future
father-in-law). I"ve only looked at records in MEcklenburg and Cabarrus Co.,
NC; but I'll now turn to Gaston as well.

Joel and I believe that we are researching the same Bradley family.
