[letter from Marjory Cowan to her brother Alexander in Bonn:]
Mr Cowan, Wilhelmstrasse Bonn. Per Rotterdam Steampacket

    Edinburgh Wednesday 31st August 1831

    My Dearest Alexander,
Papa & I walked into town this morning. We expected to receive a letter from you but it had not arrived. It is now arranged that we leave Leith by the Rotterdam Steamboat on Tuesday next. The vessel is advertised to sail that night at 10 o'clock. It is said that the passages are expected to average 50 hours, but Papa thinks we shall be at Rotterdam some time on the Saturday - therefore John must lose no time in coming to meet us there, as I suppose we should be rather at a loss without him in going up to Bonn. I think Papa intends us remaining in Holland for some day. I have written by Papa's desire to require Charles Vertue to give us a letter of introduction to his wife's sister Mrs Schultz who resides at the Hague - it will be very pleasant indeed to visit her. Lucia Anne & I heard Mr MacKenzie preach and I liked him as much as ever. We are expecting Aunt Anne & Helen home from Fife today. I am glad they are coming, as we have now so little time for out preparations. Allan told me that he had written to you about Helen remaining at Bonn during the winter, but my dear brother, I wish very much to remain if you will have me and I will be almost too happy to be with you which I have for so long ardently wished for - even tho' Henry may be in this country. I rather think, however, that he will come to Bonn before poceeding to Britain, as, by his last letter, he seemed very anxious to see you & wished you to write to him at Marseilles ( to Mssrs Folsch & co. Marseilles) & inform him if you thought of moving farther south. Dear little Puss is very sad at the thoughts of us going away and leaving her at home. I wish indeed that she could have gone with us.

    [added by her father]
    My dear Sandie,
If you are anxious about it, we will push on to Bonn immediately on reaching Rotterdam. I should like very well to make a part of the journey by land going over the ground you and I did. If we had John's assistance from Nimaguen upwards, I suppose it would be scarcely more expensive than going by Steam. The Steamboat we go by is the "King of the Netherlands". She is to make the trip betwixt this and Rotterdam every ten days. If you had any thoughts of coming home, coming by the said steamer would make it a much easier business for you.

[inscribed on outer face:] Marjory Edinburgh 31st Aug 1831 [stamped:] Engeland ver Rotterdam PAID AT EDIN AUG 31 1831

Marjory's neice Mary Constable (Mrs Forsyth) writes: " ..Now comes Aunty Marjory, who married Henry Simpson. She sang and played the guitar and piano delightfully, was enthusiastic, romantic, and married most happily the man she loved. He, Uncle Henry, was the kindest brightest, most affectionate uncle to us all there ever was. He was a real musician, and when he and Aunty Marjory were quite old they would sit down at the piano and play the most entrancing Russian duets, and then sing song after song in any language you liked, and perfectly. Aunt Marjorie had a passion for bathing. She chose a mountain burn in the end of September, because Ullswater lake was too warm for her. Nearly every morning during the winter she bathed in the sea at Portobello. "
