In 1571, education began in Lippe. In 1811, surnames were required in Lippe. Before 1800, out of class marriages were not allowed and this continued past the 19 th century. In 1840, 34 % of the people were landowners. To marry a man had to have property or a cottage and a means to support a wife. Emmigration to the USA was for many reasons, to avoid the military, marraige laws, inability to purchase land (government would not allow purchase) religion, famine, taxes etc. Lippe had strick class distinctions for marriage not allowing people to marry out of their class. In 1848, there was a revolutionary demonstration with the people demonstrating about taxes, laws and authority. Heinrich came to the USA in 1851 under an asummed name, as the name Leimkuehler and misspellings was never found. Lower class individuals had one first name and one last name in the 1800's, before this they had no surname.
