Name: Francis DRAKE , of North Elmham
Birth: ABT 1569 in Tavistock, Devon, England
Death: Deceased in North Elmham, Mitford, Norfolk, England
Francis was 1st cousin once removed of the famous Sir Francis Drake. He is not to be confused with his 2nd cousin Francis Drake, Baronet & MP (also being nephew of the famous Sir Francis), who was b. 16 Sep 1588 (about 20 years later).
Several lines in rootsweb state that Francis's mother was Elizabeth Gregorie, wife of Thomas Drake. However I believe that this is a confusion with the parents of Francis Drake the Baronet & MP, whose parents were Thomas Drake and Elizabeth Gregory. Some of the lines even have the same death date for Elizabeth (18 Mar 1631). Thus I don't know who Francis's mother is.
All of Francis's children (2 sons & 4 daughters) appear to have been born in North Elmham, Norfolk. Obviously Francis must have moved to that location before or soon after marriage.
I don't know what his profession was: it could have something to do with shipping and or fishing, as many of the Drakes were involved with.
There were a number of Drakes (mostly cousins) in Tavistock at the time of Francis's birth.
Francis's wife was Joan Rice, great grandaughter of Rhys ap Griffith (grandson of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, KG, who was instrumental in bringing Henry VII to the throne) and Katherine Howard, dau. of Thomas Howard, 2nd Duke of Norfolk. These great grandparents would appear to be much too noble for a wife of Francis. However Rhys ap Griffith was stripped of all of his grandfather's estates by Henry VIII (for some unknown reason), and was subsequently executed when he plotted treason. Apparently treason came after losing his estates. Thus I am not sure how much his heirs inherited.
