  • ID: I39170
  • Name: Philippa BONVILLE 1
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: ABT 1414 in Shute, Axminster, Devon, England 2
  • Birth: BEF 1396 1
  • Death: AFT MAR 1457/58 1
  • Note:
The following is part of a post to SGM, 11 Sep 2002, by Brad Verity, indicating that Philippa was a daughter, not a sister of Lord Bonville:

Last year I participated in research on the Grenvilles of Cornwall and Devon. Philippa Bonville married as his second wife William Grenville after 12 May 1427. HOP states Philippa was the daughter of William, Lord Bonville, which would make her born after 1414 (when the contract for Lord Bonville to marry Margaret Grey was finalized). This would make her a young teen at her marriage to William Grenville, which fits your theory that women of her rank were married before age 20.

But Magna Charta Sureties and you yourself stated that Philippa was the sister, not the daughter, of Lord Bonville. As Lord Bonville's father died in 1396, this would make Philippa at least age 30 on her marriage to William Grenville.

    ------------

The following is part of a post to SGM, 1 Jun 2001, by Brad Verity, on the same subject (I do not know who originially posted the info on MCS line 22, which Brad is referring to--probably Louise Staley, but the google search could not locate it within SGM even though I copy/pasted the exact text into my search: VERY FRUSTRATING that google's search has so many problems searching its own domain):

    >MC line 22 by Douglas Richardson makes her the daughter of John Bonville
    >and Elizabeth Fitzroger and therefore born before 1396 when John Bonville
    >died. She had at least 3 children after her marriage to William Grenville
    >in 1427 and remarried after 1450 when William died.

Probably the marriage dates, if we can ascertain them, of the 3 William
Grenville/Philippa Bonville children, can help us determine whether she was
the daughter or sister of the 1st Lord Bonville.

NOTE: The point about Philippa's age at her first marriage, plus the fact that she had 3 children by her 2nd husband (after the 1348-1350 death of her first), indicates that she was much younger than one born by 1396.
