The following is post to SGM, 26 Jul 2003, by John Higgins:
Looking at the pedigree charts on the Fortescue book that Louise cites below, the first two generations (the two Williams) are OK. But Sir Heny who was Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas in Ireland is indicated as being a son, not of the 2nd William, but of his brother Sir John Fortescue of Shepham and his wife Eleanor, dau. of William Norreys [or Norreis].. Also, no daughter is given for Sir Henry by either of his wives (1st, Joan, dau. of Edmund Bosun of Wood; 2nd, a dau. of Nicholas Fallapit). The pedigree in the Fortescue book agreees with that in Vivian's edition of the visitations of Devon.
I can't immediately locate a Margaret Fortescue who m. a Strode in the Fortescue pedigrees. I note she is listed in the Strode pedigree in Vivian's Devon as dau. of Henry Fortescue of Wood, and Sir Henry is certainly the logical candidate, but I don't see any proof that he's the right one.
FWIW, Margaret Fortescue and Richard Strode are ancestors of Princess Diana.....
Louise Staley had stated in a previous post on 22 Jul 2003:
The source for many things Fortescue is "A History of the Family of Fortescue in All Its Branches", 2nd ed., London 1880 by Thomas (Fortescue) Lord Clermont.
