Name: Maud de CAUZ , Heiress of Laxton & Shelford 1 2
Birth: ABT 1160 in Shelford, Bingham, Nottinghamshire, England
Death: BET 1203 AND 1223 in Laxton, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, England (dsp)
To this barony of Cauz belonged the custody of the forests in the counties of Nott. and Derb. which Matildis de Cauz had by inheritance, and John Earl of Morton (afterwards king) confirmed to her and her husband Raph Fitz-Stephen, and her heirs, as in the forest book is noted, and in that place may be recited more particularly. It appears that in the beginning of the reign of H. 3 for a small fine the said Matildis had seisin of her lands her self, and in 4 H. 3. that Matilda de Cauz ought fourscore marks for having seisin of the custody of the forests of Nott. and Derb. which belonged to her by right of inheritance.
[Thoroton's History of Nottinghamshire: volume 3: Republished with large additions by John Throsby, pp. 205-12]
NOTE: Thoroton/Throsby mistakenly assumed that there was only one Maud/Matilda de Cauz, who was m. to both Adam FitzPeter de Birkin and Ralph FitzStephen. This makes it hard to say which Maud is being written about. I have not found a good indication of when Maud, the wife of Ralph FitzStephen, died. Although she was born later than her aunt, she died before her (ie. before 1224) and after her husband (ie. after 1202) without issue and her aunt Maud was her heir.
