The manor and advowson remained in the hands of the Stepneth family, and were sold by Paul Stepneth and Sarah his wife on 20 January, 1588-9, to Edward Carey, master and treasurer of Queen Elizabeth's jewels and plate, who was afterwards knighted, and died on 18 July, 1617, leaving Henry his son and heir, on whom the manor had been settled at the time of his marriage with Elizabeth Tanfield in 1602.
