  • ID: I36185
  • Name: John PEYVRE , of Toddington & Chilton 1 2
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: John /Pever/, of Chilton
  • Birth: ABT 1240 in Toddington, Ampthill, Bedfordshire, England 3
  • Death: AUG 1267 in Chilton, Thame, Buckinghamshire, England 1 4
  • Note:
JOHN PEYVRE, son and heir, was among those summoned, "with their services," to hear and to do the King's command in 1260. In the troubles of 1264 and 1265 he remained loyal to the King.

He married, 1stly, at (Water) Eton, Bucks, before Michaelmas 1251, a daughter of Sir John DE GREY abovenamed. He married, 2ndly, Emma (m). He died in or before August 1267, custody of his lands and heirs being granted to Queen Eleanor. His widow died about 20 March 1271/2, in possession of her dower. [Complete Peerage X:514-5, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    (m) Perhaps a daughter of Sir Geoffrey de Langley. Master Piers Peyvre, a kinsman, bought the marriage of the heir from Sir John de Grey, and sold it to Sir Geoffrey de Langley. Sir Paulin and Master Piers Peyvre were 1st and 2nd witnesses to a grant by the Archdeacon of Bedford.

NOTE: CP does not state which wife was mother of the son & heir (John Peyvre b. 1262). However, if I interpret note (m) correctly, it seems that Piers bought the marriage of the heir from John de Grey (who had purchased it from the mother Joan le Esquier) even after John de Grey's daughter had already married John Peyvre; in which case, probably the 1st wife (John de Grey's daughter) may have died without producing a male child, and the right to determine the marriage of the heir still had value to Geoffrey de Langley. Therefore I am placing the son & heir under the 2nd wife Emma (de Langley).
