  • ID: I35784
  • Name: Benjamin BORDEN 1
  • Sex: M
  • Birth: 16 MAY 1649 in Portsmouth, Newport, RI 2
  • Death: JUN 1728 in Burlington Co, NJ 3
  • Note:
The following from: Historical and Genealogical Record of the Descendants, as Far as is Known, of Richard and Joan Borden Who Settled in Portsmouth, RI in 1638, Compiled by Hattie Borden Weld in 1899:

    11. BENJAMIN, born May. 1649; died 1718, in Burlington county. New Jersey. He settled in Middletown, N. J., in 1672. and married Abigail, the daughter to James Grover, surveyor and secretary of the Gravesend Iand Co. The family of Benjamin drifted toward West Jersey.

"Benjamin waa the youngest son of Richard, and at the death of his father was 21 years of age. He likewise received a legacy of only 40 on the same conditions as Joseph and Samuel did; it would, therefore, seem that his only reliance for support was in his own efforts. The will of Richard furnishes the latest date I have found concerning Benjamin. As he does not appear in the Portsmouth records I have concluded to add his name to the emigrants to New Jersey, where his two brothers, Francis and Samuel, had preceded him. The practice of surveying land in former times was a constant employment of many of the old stock of Bordens, and as they found it advantageous to themselves, they taught it to their sons as a source of revenue, for the purchase of land and all the necessaries of life. Especially was this true in the time of Samuel and Benjamin, when New Jersey and Pennsylvania first came into the market." [Rev. Pardon Gray Seabury's Manuscript]

NOTE: I have another family (the Goldens) that moved from Gravesend to Middletown around 1670. They must have known each other. The timing might well have to do with the British taking New Amsterdam in 1664.
