    AYMER de VALENCE (c1270- 27 Jun 1324 suddenly possibly murdered dsp in France buried 1 August, Westminster Abbey with effigy); 3rd s; 2nd Earl PEMBROKE; Lord of WEXFORD (after mother's death); Lord of MONTIGNAC; Lord VALENCE etc.; Appointed to many offices; In 1297 served in Flanders; In 1300-7 served in Scotland; In 1300 at siege of Carlaverock; In Aug 1301 was granted Bothwell castle, Scotland, which had belonged to WILLIAM de MORAY; In 1301-3 joint Ambasodor to France; In 1306 he defeated ROBERT BRUCE at Methven, near Perth then took Bruce's brother (beheaded at Berwick) and wife at Kintyre castle; In Oct 1306 he was granted Selkirk and Tresquayr castles; In May 1307 defeated by Bruce at Loudon Hill; In 1307 and 1312 joint Ambasador to France and in 1308/9 and 1312 to the pope; In 1308 granted Haverford town and castle; In 1312, with Earl SURREY captured the king's friend PIERS de GAVASTON at Scarborough castle, who was seized and beheaded by Earl WARWICK against AYMER's orders, after which AYMER rejoined king's party; In 1312 king granted him New Temple and all other Templars lands in London, but in 1315 he gave these properties to LANCASTER; In June 1313 fought at Bannockburn followed by several expeditions into Scotland; In 1319 at siege of Berwick; In 1317 taken captive in Burgundy then ransomed; In 1320 Guardian of the realm during King's absence; In 1321 mediated between king and barons, although secretly sympathised with barons; In Oct 1321 with Edward in besieging Leeds Castle, Kent; In March 1321/2 took part in condemnation of LANCASTER; In March 1322/3 he and his wife were granted much of LANCASTER's estate including New Temple; In 1323 concluded 13 years truce with Scotland. He held East Sutton, formally held by Martel and Eggarton manor, Godmersham parish, Kent; He gave Milton church, Kent to religious order;

    He married 1st (bfr 1312) Beatrice (-bfr 14 Sep 1320 bur Stratford dsp) 3rd daughter & child of RALPH de CLERMONT Lord NEELLE and BROIS, Constable of France, by his marriage 1st Alice suo jure Vicomtesse de Chateaudun and dame de Montdoubleau 1st daughter of ROBERT DE DREUX Lord BEU by Clemence daughter of GEOFFREY 12th Vicmote Chateaudun married 2nd Jul 1321 Paris, Mary (-Mar 1377 Denny bur Denny) daughter of GUY de CHATILLON Count St POL by Mary daughter of JOHN Duke BRITTANY & Earl RICHMOND by Beatrice daughter of HENRY III; Mary founded Pembroke (formally Mary de Valence) college, Cambridge, and Denny Abbey, Cambridgeshire. In 1237 Mary released Hartford Castle and town to the king who granted them to THOMAS 3rd Baron WAKE later Governor of Channel Islands and Constable of Tower of London. AYMER is sometimes shown as married 2nd daughter of Count BARRE, but probably incorrect He had a natural son, HENRY, who was captured with him in 1317.
