EARLDOM OF NORTHUMBERLAND (III, 1) 1189 to 1194

HUGH DE PUISET (or Pudsey), Bishop of Durham, 1153-1195, purchased the Earldom of Northumberland from Richard I, when that King was raising funds for his crusade, 25 Nov 1189, for 2,000 marks (g). On the King's return to England, two days after his 2nd Coronation at Winchester (17 Apr 1194), the Bishop is said to have voluntarily surrendered the Earldom, and the King to have charged him to deliver it to Hugh Bardolf (a).

    (g) The Bishop appears to have obtained possession in Mar 1190. The 2,000 marks was still owing after his death.

    (a) The circumstances are interesting. On his way south to the Coronation, the Bishop refused to allow the King of Scots to be lodged in a house of his at Brackley. One may imagine what took place later at Winchester, especially with the help of a document that remains from this year, setting out the attendances which the King of Scotland's ancestors had when coming to court, which began with his reception in the Marches by the Bishop of Durham, and the sheriffs and barons of Northumberland, who escorted him to the Tees. If such attendance was given on this occasion by the Bishop, then Earl, to the King, still sorely smarting under the deprivation of his Earldom, the meeting could hardly have been a cordial one.

NOTE: Hugh Bardolf is not mentioned in connection with the Earldom by CP. The next Earl was Henry de Percy in 1377.

NOTE: According to Paul Reed in SGM & Leo van de Pas, Hugh had 3 illegitimate sons by Adeliza/Adelaide de Percy. These were Henri/Henry; Hugh/Hugues, Chancellor of the King of France; and Burchard, Archdeacon in Durham.
