    BARONY OF HERBERT (II) 1469

EARLDOM OF PEMBROKE (XVIII, 2) 1469 to 1479

EARLDOM OF HUNTINGDON (XVII, 1) 1479 to 1491

WILLIAM (HERBERT), EARL OF PEMBROKE and LORD HERBERT, only son and heir, born circa 1455, was knighted September 1466. When Edward IV entered London in triumph after Tewkesbury, 21 May 1471, he rode with Gloucester and other lords at the head of the procession. On 27 August he was joint Commissioner of Array for South Wales and the Marches. On 29 August he had licence to enter into the offices of Chief Justice and Chamberlain of South Wales; and on 4 October 1475 to enter into all his manors, &c. He took part in the expedition to France in that year. In 1479 he resigned the Earldom of Pembroke, and on 4 July 1479 he was created EARL OF HUNTINGDON, with remainder to the heirs of the body of his father. At the Coronation of Richard III, 6 July 1483, he bore the Queen's Sceptre. He was Chamberlain to the little Prince of Wales. He was appointed joint Commissioner of Array in Wales 5 November, and Chief Justice of South Wales 15 November 1483. The charter creating him Earl of Huntingdon was confirmed 27 May 1484 and again 17 May 1488 with limitation to his father's heirs male of the body.

He married, 1stly, 20 January 1466/7, at Windsor, Mary, sister of the Queen Consort Elizabeth, and daughter of Richard (WYDEVILLE), 1st EARL RIVERS, by Jaqueline, daughter of Piers DE LUXEMBURG, COUNT OF ST. POL. He married, 2ndly, between 3 March and 29 September 1483/4, Katharine, illegitimate daughter of RICHARD III (a). He died s.p.m., 16 July 1491, and was buried at Tintern Abbey. On his death the Earldom of Huntingdon became extinct, but the Barony of Herbert, according to modern doctrine, devolved on his daughter and heir Elizabeth, who married, in 1492, Sir Charles Somerset, who was created Earl of Worcester. [Complete Peerage X:402-3, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    (a) On 8 Mar 1484/5 an annuity was granted to the King's kinsman William, Earl of Huntingdon, and Katharine his wife, until they should have grants to themselves and the heirs of their bodis of lordships, &c. to the same value. This proves that the marriage took place, which was doubted by Dugdale and in the 1st edition of this work.
