  • ID: I32862
  • Name: Mary (Maria) WALROND
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: ABT 1338 in Bradfield, Tiverton, Devon, England
  • Note:
I received the following e-mail from Ken Ozanne, which prompted my reworking Mary's ancestry. Ken is following Burke's Landed Gentry (1847), while others (notably John Young (World Connect db=jhqmytal)) follow the Visitations of Devon. The two different sources come up with entirely different pedigrees. The Visitations of Devon state that Mary Walrond, wife of Richard Fowell, was the mother of Jane/Joan Fowell who m. Philip Courtenay & Humphrey Prideaux, while the Landed Gentry has Mary from a much earlier date. Given what I have found from A2A on the Walrond line (see notes under Joan Walrond, b. 1411), if Mary's father was William Walrond, then Burke's Landed Gentry would seem the better source. A2A indicates that all of the probable William Walronds were born much too early for Mary to have been mother of Jane Fowell.

The Visitations of Devon, according to John Young (db=jhqmytal), do give an ancestry for the Richard who m. Mary Walrond, which I will follow, with the following exception: The Visitations indicate that Richard, Mary's husband, had Richard and Blanche Hayes as parents, while Burke's Landed Gentry (according to Ken Ozanne) states that Blanche Hayes was mother of the Jane/Joan Fowell who m. Philip Courtenay & Humphrey Prideaux. This puts them quite a ways apart in years. I don't know for sure which pedigree is correct, but will go with Ken Ozanne's Landed Gentry source; thus I will leave Mary's husband Richard without a known mother. Note that since very few dates are given in the Visitations or in the Landed Gentry, it is possible for these people to be placed in practically any time within +- 150 years (ie. Blanche Hayes could be b. c1300 or c1450, depending on which Richard Fowell she was married to).

Note that, according to Magna Carta Ancestry, Ken's pedigree is wrong in one place: Joan Fowell's 1st husband Philip Courtenay, didn't die until 26 Mar 1514, so the offspring she had with Humphrey Prideaux (and she did have issue according to MCA) had to have been born at the earliest 1515, giving her 9 months after her earliest possible marriage to Humphrey.

    Jim,
I think I may have found something to sink our teeth into. I looked initially at your Walronds and can add, easily:

Roger de Bradfelle still alive in 1160
    NN de Bradfelle
    Richard de Bradfelle fl 1154
    Richard de Bradfelle
Richard Walrond of Bradfield. (It seems clear that he deliberately adopted the surname)
    William Walrond
John Walrond The first you have (All this and most of the following from Landed Gentry, starting p 1503 in the 1847 edition)
John Walrond = Joan Stowford You have him born abt 1355 but Burke has him temp Edw I and I estimate death soon after 1300.
John Walrond You don't have him
    William Walrond = Melior
    William Walrond = Alice Hake
    William Walrond = Julian
Mary (Maria) = Richard Fowhill (Fowell) I have this woman as sister, not daughter of William and have a note that she might even be a daughter of William and Melior. According to Landed Grentry this Richard lived temp Edward II and had a summons from that monarch dated 15-2-1322. I have a few more generations of Walronds, but I descend also from this marriage.

You have Jane (Joan, Joanne) Fowell the daughter of this marriage, Chronologically, that can't be right. I have:
William Fowell = d of Halwell (adopting your spelling)
    John Fowell = Joane
William = Eleanor Reynell William was MP for Totness 1455
    Richard = (1) Blanche Hayes
Joane (Jane) = (1) Philip Courtenay
    (2) Humphrey Prideaux He was my 12G grandfather and I have him born 1487 or 1506.

My chronology seems better than yours, but I wish I had a few more dates. I looked through Gen-Medieval archives but there is very little about Walronds and that not relevant.

    Over to you.

    Best,
    Ken
