EARLDOM OF CAITHNESS (XVI & XVIII, 3) 1401, 1431 to 1437 (Walter's son Alan was Earl in 1428 to 1431)

WALTER STEWART, 6th and youngest son of ROBERT II, KING OF SCOTLAND, being his 2nd son by his 2nd wife, Eupheme, was created, about 1402, and before July 1402, EARL OF CAITHNESS [Scotland] on the resignation of his niece, Eupheme, Countess Palatine of Strathern and Countess of Caithness [Scotland], who was daughter and heir of his elder brother David, the possessor of those dignities. He was afterwards, shortly before 8 June 1404, creted EARL OF ATHOLL [Scotland]. He was GREAT JUSTICIAR [Scotland], and on 22 July 1427 was created EARL PALATINE OF STRATHERN [Scotland] for life.

He married, before 19 October 1378, Margaret, daughter and heir of Sir David BARCLAY, Laird of Brechini, co. Forfar, by Janet, daughter of Sir Edward KEITH, of Synton. By her he acquired the Lordship of Brechin. She died before 1 August 1404, when he had dispensation to marry Elizabeth, daughter of Sir William GRAHAME, of Kincardine (possibly 1st Lord GRAHAM [Scotland]) but there is no evidence that the marriage took place, and on 3 February 1407/8, this Elizabeth married the Earl's half brother, Sir John STEWART, of Dundonald, illegitimate son of Robert III. Though greatly trusted by his nephew, James I, he long cherished a design to supplant him on the throne, to which, as a representative of the 2nd marriage of his father, he conceived himself to have a better right than the doubtfully legitimate issue of his father's 1st wife. Accordingly he and his grandson and heir apparent were among the chief contrivers of the murder of James I, 20 Feb. I436/7. They were both put to death, the Earl being executed at Edinburgh 26 March 1437, when his titles and extensive estates became forfeited. [Complete Peerage I:312, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
