EARLDOM OF DEVON (VI) 1217
BALDWIN (DE REVIERS), EARL OF DEVON, LORD OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT, grandson and heir, being son and heir of Baldwin DE REVIERS, by Margaret, his wife. He was knighted by the King, and invested with the Earldom of Devon, 25 December 1239, at Winchester. He accompanied the Earl of Cornwall to the Holy Land in June 1240, and was with the King in Gascony in 1242.
He married, in 1226, Amice, 1st daughter of Gilbert (DE CLARE), EARL OF GLOUCESTER AND HERTFORD, by Isabel, sister and in her issue coheir of Walter, EARL OF PEMBROKE, and 2nd daughter of William (LE MARESCHAL), EARL OF PEMBROKE. He died 15 February 1244/5, aged about 28, and was buried in Breamore Priory, Hants. His widow's dower was assigned 22 April 1245. On 10 January 1247/8 the King gave his assent to the marriage of Amice to Robert DE GYNES (younger son of Arnoul II, COUNT OF GUINES) if she consented thereto[e]. She, who founded the Abbey of Buckland, Devon, was born 27 May 1220, and died shortly before 21 January 1283/4, aged 63. [Complete Peerage IV:318-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
[e] There is no evidence that he ever married her, and she was certainly unmarried in April 1249.
