    EARLDOM OF OXFORD (XIV) 1513

JOHN (DE VERE), EARL OF OXFORD, dejure (according to modern doctrine) LORD PLAIZ, and Hereditary Lord Great Chamberlain of England, nephew and heir, being 2nd but only surviving son and heir of Sir George VERE, 3rd son of the 12th Earl, by Margaret, daughter and heir of Sir William STAFFORD, of Bishop's Frome, co. Hereford, was born 14 August 1499. Custody was granted to the Duke of Norfolk 29 May 1514. In June 1520 he attended the King at the Field of Cloth of Gold. He had an order for livery of his inheritance on 16 August; but his extravagance led the King to put him back in Norfolk's care in 1523. However, he was at Court in 1525 and 1526.

He married Anne, daughter of Thomas (HOWARD), 2nd DUKE OF NORFOLK, by his 2nd wife, Agnes daughter of Hugh TYLNEY, of Boston, Lincs. He died s.p., 14 July 1526, and was buried at Colne Priory. At his death the office of Lord Great Chamberlain reverted to the Crown, as did also the Barony of Plaiz, although according to modern doctrine it fell into abeyance, between his 2 survIving sisters and coheirs and the son and heir of his eldest sister. His widow died before 22 February 1558/9, when she was buried in Lambeth Parish Church. [Complete Peerage X:244-5, XIV:518, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
