    EARLDOM OF OXFORD (VIII) 1360

THOMAS (DE VERE), EARL OF OXFORD, and Hereditary Chamberlain of England, 2nd but 1st surviving son and heir, was born probably in 1336 or 1337. In August 1357 the King granted him an annuity of 40. He served in his father's last campaign, 1359-60, and had order forthwith for livery of his inheritance. In October 1360 he was with the King at Calais. During 1361 and 1362 he was under orders to accompany the King's son Lionel, Earl of Ulster (husband of his wife's half-sister), on his expedition to Ireland. Between 1362 and 1369 he seems to have been occupied mainly with local duties in Essex, with intervals spent at Court. In the year after his mother's death he sold part of her Irish estates to the Earl of Ormond. He served in France in 1369, and took part in the raids organised from Calais.

He married, before 10 June 1350, Maud, daughter and heir of Sir Ralph DE UFFORD, Chief Justice of Ireland, brother of Robert (de Ufford), 1st Earl of Suffolk, by Maud, widow of William (DE BURGH), 3rd EARL OF ULSTER, and daughter of Henry, 3rd EARL OF LANCASTER, grandson of Henry III. He died at Great Bentley, Essex, September (12-18) 1371, and was buried at Earls Colne. Dower was assigned to his widow 25 February 1371/2. Robes of the Garter were provided for her in 1386, 1388-90 and 1399. In 1404 she took part in Essex in the conspiracy against Henry IV, and was put in the Tower; but she was pardoned on 16 November. She died 25 January 1412/3, presumably at Great Bentley, and was buried at Bruisyard, Suffolk. [Complete Peerage X:226-7, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
