    EARLDOM OF PEMBROKE (IX) 1245

    ANSELM (MARSHAL), EARL OF PEMBROKE, and hereditary Master Marshal, brother and heir, being 5th and youngest son of the 4th Earl, who bequeathed him 140 librates of land. He was with his brothers in Ireland, and after the death of Richard he passed over to England with Gilbert and Walter,, and was pardoned with them. He succeeded his brother Walter in November 1245, but died before he was invested with the Earldom.

    He married Maud, daughter of Humphrey (DE BOHUN), 2nd EARL OF HEREFORD and 1st EARL OF ESSEX, by Maud, daughter of Ralph DE LUSIGNAN, COUNT OF Eu. He died s.p., 22, 23 or 24 December 1245, at Chepstow, and was buried at Tintern Abbey. On his death the Earldom of Pembroke reverted to the Crown, but the office of Marshal passed to his eldest sister and coheir, Maud, Countess of Norfolk. His widow married 2ndly, after January 1245/6, as his 2nd wife, Roger [de Quincy], 2nd Earl of Winchester. The vast estates were divided among his 5 sisters or their issue.
