OWNERS of the LORDSHIP of ABERGAVENNY (II) temp. Henry I

Brien Fitz Count, or of Wallingford, illegitimate son of Alan Fergent, Duke or Count of Brittany, was a Welsh magnate before 6 Oct 1119, being then possessed of the honour of Abergavenny (ie. Over Gwent), which he held either by grant to him and his wife, Maud, Lady of Wallingford (b), or else solely in her right. They transferred the honour to Miles, Earl of Hereford in 1141-2 to be held of them and their heirs by the service of 3 knights. [Complete Peerage I:20]

    (b) According to an inquisition in the 'Testa de Nevill', she was a widow of Miles Crespin (a Domesday tenant), who d. 1107, and daughter and heir of Robert d'Oilly of Wallingford (another Domesday tenant) by the daughter & heir (Ealdgyth) of Wigod, Lord of Wallingford temp. King Harold. But this inquisition is of too late a date to be implicitly relied on.

NOTE: Rosie Bevan, in a post to SGM 10 Jul 2000, states that Keats-Rohan asserts that Maud was not widow of Miles Crispin/Crespin, but was his daughter by Matilda daughter of Robert d'Oilly by Ealdgyth daughter of Wigod of Wallingford.
