  • ID: I26761
  • Name: Matilda (Mabel) CHAMPERNOUN , Lady of Otterham 1
  • Sex: F
  • ALIA: Matilda (Mabel) of /Otterham/
  • Birth: ABT 1230 in Otterham, Camelford, Cornwall, England
  • Death: BEF 1269
  • Note:
Ivor West speculates that Matilda is the daughter of Oliver Champernoun, as William Champernoun held Otterham in 1346, indicating it was in the family.

The following additional information is provided by Curt Hofemann, curt_hofemann AT

Actually Ivor West was musing on John Benson's article in DCNQ (Devon & Cornwall notes & queries) vol. 21 & he used Trans. Dev. Assoc., vol 73, "The Heritage of Prouz" re: the devolution of Otterham to the Champernouns. Ivor also cited Devon Fine 605 of 1256 which showed the wife of William de Ferrers was Mabel (NN), which Ivor states "presumably" is Matilda/Mabel of Otterham.

Note: Mabel is NOT equivalent to Matilda/Mathilda/Maud (scribal errors notwithstanding)... Curt

Later in the same 6 Aug 1999 message to soc.genealogy.medieval message he states: "Benson started his article on Otterham by quoting Hingeston-Randolph's comment "Matilda, Lady of Otterham, i.e., Matilda Champernowne". Does he mean by this that she was a daughter, say, of Oliver de Champernowne? It would make William de Champernowne and Joan de Ferrers cousins."

She could also reasonably be 'presumed' to be a non-Champernoun related sole heiress of Otterham who became the wife of a Champernoun. Without a marriage record or other more definitive attestation in primary records all is speculaton only... Curt

Also, as Joan de Ferrers, her daughter, married William Champernoun, Curt adds:

Jim, not to belabor this, but how likely is it that her dau Joan would/could marry her first cousin? That was a seriously fobidden degree of consanguity that would not have gone unnoticed & unless a dispensation record is found for Joan & Wm's marriage (or some other primary record), the ancestry of Joan's purported mother Mabel is still (for now) unknown.
