    Magnus I Erlendsson afterwards Saint, Jarl of half Orkney (Spring 1108 to 16 Apr. (?) 1117), was page to King Magnus Barelegs (Spring-Summer 1098). He escaped from his service after having refused to fight in the battle of Anglesey Sound (? 28 June 1098) and took refuge in Scotland. After his cousin Hakon had "taken the rule in the Orkneys" (? Spring 1105) Magnus came north to claim his fatherís heritage, and, after negotiations went to Norway (? Spring 1108) to King Eystein I, and received the title of Jarl and investiture with his fatherís half of Orkney. After his death on Egilsay ut sapra (16 Apr. (?) 1117), he was canonized. The cathedral of Kirkwall was dedicated to him by his nephew Jarl Kali-Ragnvald in 1137, and his body, which had been bur. by his mother Thora in Christchurch at Birsay, was translated to the cathedral. Jarl Magnus m. an unnamed "maiden of the most noble race of Scotland," but d. s.p. [Complete Peerage, X:Appendix A:18]
