    EARLDOM of CAITHNESS (VI, 7, 8, 9, and 10) 1170?

NORSE PREDECESSORS of the EARLS of ORKNEY - subject to King of Norway until after 1379

Harald III Ungi Ericsson, b. circa 1155 or later, grandson of Jarl Kali-Ragnvald, received investiture as Jarl with grant of his grandfather’s half of Orkney from King Magnus V Erlingsson, and then went to King William the Lion and received a grant of the half of Caithness which had belonged to his grandfather. This he occupied, apparently content for the time being not to claim his half of Orkney from Jarl Harald Maddadsson. Later he secured recognition and a regrant of half of Orkney from King Sverri, and on the strength of this called upon Jarl Harald Maddadsson in 1598 to surrender Jarl Kali-Ragnvald's half of Orkney to him. On receiving a refusal he attacked Jarl Harald Maddadsson, supported by his brother Elin, his brother-in-law and chief counsellor Hilfolf Skalli, and his kinsman Sigurd Murt, and was killed with all of them in the battle of Wick, 1198.

[After the death of Jarl Harald II Maddadsson in 1206 his eldest surviving son Heinrek or Henry seems to have been Earl of Ross, while his sons David (1206 to 1214) and John I (1206 to 1231) divided the Earldom of Orkney between them. After the end of the civil war in Norway in 1208 they sent Bishop Biarni of Orkney to Norway to make their peace with King Ingi II Bardsson (1204 to 1217), and in 1210 they went to Bergen, paid a large fine, gave security and hostages, and swore allegiance apparently both to King Ingi II Bardsson and to his half-brother Jarl Hakon Galin. The two were then made Jarls over Orkney and Shetland. Jarl David d. 1214 (? a. 1 Aug.), and after that Jarl John I ruled as sole Jarl.] [Complete Peerage, X:Appendix A:26-7]
