    BARONY OF HYLTON (II) 1310?

ROBERT (DE HILTON), LORD HILTON, grandson and heir, being son and heir of Sir Alexander [DE HILTON) by Elizabeth his wife. From 1309 to 1315 he attested various Durham charters, and in 1312 was placed on the commission of the peace in Durham. In 1313 he obtained licence that the lords of Hilton, their wives and children might be buried in the graveyard attached to the chapel of Hilton. Mortuaries, &c., were to be paid to the church of Wearmouth. On 11 December 1313 Bishop Kellaw allowed him two cygnets from the fishponds at Middlebam. From 1314-17 he was one of several claimants to the estates of William de Vesci the elder, but the decision was in favour of Gilbert de Aton. In 1315 his absence from Parliament, to which it was said he had been summoned, was excused as he was stationed in the Marches of Scotland. On 6 June 1319 he was taken prisoner by the Scots at Berwick, when Douglas defeated Sir Ralph Neville. He presented Thomas de Hilton to the chapel at Hilton 9 December 1321, and in January 1321/2 granted his chaplain, William de Hilton, tithe of the passage of Bovisferry, at Hilton, over the Wear, in exchange for rents.

He married, 1stly, Joan. He married, 2ndly, before 13 February 1314/5, Ellen, widow of Walter (DE HUNTERCOMBE), LORD HUNTERCOMBE who died in 1313. With her he had Wrestlingworth, Beds, for life. She was living in 1331, but died before 12 April 1339. He died between January 1321/2 and January 1322/3, and was buried in Hilton Chapel.
