  • ID: I24980
  • Name: Hugh de TOENI , a monk 1 2
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: Hugo de /Cavalcamp/, Archbishop of Rouen
  • Birth: BEF 915 in Tosni, Louviers, Eure, Normandy, France 1
  • Death: 10 NOV 989 in Rouen, Seine-Inferieue, Normandy, France 1
  • Note: HUGH, born probably before 915, became a monk at the famous abbey of St. Denis in the kingdom of France, where he must soon have made a certain reputation; for in 942 William Longsword, the 1st truly christian Duke of the Normans, called him to Normandy and made him archbishop of Rouen. However, Hugh, although (it is said) of noble family, was ignoble in all his works, begat a number of children, and destroyed the church and the property of the church. He was appointed or consecrated, 18 December 942. He handed over the domain of Toeni, now Tosni, which formed part of the estates of the archbishopric, to his brother Ralph. He died 10 November 989 or 990. Nothing is known of his children. [Complete Peerage XII/1:753-4, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
