  • ID: I24783
  • Name: William SPERNORE , of Spernall & Frankley, MP,Sir 1 2 3 4
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: William /Durvassal/, of Spernall & Frankley, Sir
  • Birth: BEF 1328 in Spernal, Studley, Warwickshire, England 5
  • Death: 1401 in Frankley, Rugby, Worcestershire, England 1
  • Note:
    Concerning Spernal, Warwickshire:

In 1378 Rose, the widow of Nicholas and then wife of Richard Mountford, disputed against a William Durvassal the right of her daughters, Eleanor and Elizabeth, to a tenement in Spernall. This Eleanor married John Holt, to whose son Walter the manor later came. This William Durvassal (perhaps illegitimate) seems to be identical with William Spernore, knight of the shire for Worcester in the Parliament of 1397, and obtained a life interest in the manor. In 1401 the manor of Spernall, then held as half a fee, on the death of William Spernore, reverted to Walter Holt...

    ---------------------

NOTE: The following original document, copied from A2A, explains how William fits into the Durvassal family: he was a younger brother of Thomas (and Nicholas because he was the next to inherit), and was given the life estate mentioned above by Thomas. While there is certainly room for two generations of William (William, the husband of Alice, being the son of William who was born <1328), I am representing it as one because the life estate for Spernal indicates that there was only one man, of age in 1349 and dead in 1401, with William having a very late marriage to Alice.

These documents are held at Warwickshire County Record Office

    Contents:
Pair of indentures. Thomas Durvassal of Spernore (Spernall) gives to William the son and Sibilla the widow of John Durvassal late lord of Spernall, property in Spernall for life.

NOTE: The above document does not state that Sibilla, the widow, was mother of Thomas (as you would think Thomas might refer to his mother in other ways than "widow" of his father), therefore Sibilla may have been a 2nd wife, possibly mother of William (apparently the youngest of the 3 sons). However there is no proof of this.

    Concerning Frankley, Worcestershire:

Joan widow of Sir Richard Fitton in 1384 sold her right to William de Spernall, who in 1399-1400 settled the manor on himself and his wife Alice and their issue male, with contingent remainder to his right heirs. William died without issue male, leaving two daughters, Margaret, who married firstly Henry Hervyle, and secondly William Wybbe, and Joyce, who married William Swynfen. Alice widow of William married Sir Thomas Stafford, and afterwards John Mulsho. She apparently held the manor for life, and made various settlements of it, conveying it to William Sulney and John Alrewich as trustees, and in 1401-2 it was confirmed to them by Edward son of Thomas de Frankley. Later Alice conveyed her claim in the manor to Cornelius de Wirleye, who reconveyed it to Sir Thomas Burdet, Edmund Stafford, Bishop of Exeter, and others, who were probably trustees for Alice's daughters.
