  • ID: I24363
  • Name: Geoffrey de WASTENEYS , of Tixall, Sir
  • Sex: M
  • ALIA: Geoffrey de /Wastneys/
  • Birth: ABT 1132 in Colton, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England
  • Death: 1166 in Tixall Manor, Stafford, Staffordshire, England
  • Note:
    The existence of Geoffrey de Wasteneys (son of Geoffrey Wastneys, alias Geoffrey de Gastinois), and father of Payne de Wasteneys, b. 1165 of Tixall Manor, is pieced together from two sources, the first source (below, on the history of Tixall Manor) places Geoffrey de Wasteneys in Tixall Manor in 1166/7. The second source is a 3 generation line found in smokykin.com which is as follows:

    1. Geoffrey de Wasteneys, b. 1070; m. wife, b. 1072 of Osgarthorp
    2. Mr. de Wasteneys, b. 1100 of Osgarthorp;
    3. Geoffrey de Wasteneys, Sir, b. 1132, d. 1166; m. 1158 wife, b. of Tixall, Yorkshire
    4. no children indicated, but Payne de Wasteneys, b. 1165 of Tixall would seem likely

    The placement of Tixall in Yorkshire is an error, it is in Staffordshire. Geoffrey de Wasteneys (#1) seems to be the same as Geoffrey de Wastney, born about the same time, of Osgarthorp, ancestor of the Wasteneys of Colton. Geoffrey de Wasteneys (#3) also appears to be the Geoffrey de Wasteneys named as holding Tixall Manor 1166/7 in the history of Tixall Manor article. The Mr. de Wasteneys (#2) would have to be (a fairly big presumption, I know) Geoffrey de Gastinois. I know of only a couple of historical figures by the name (neither seems appropriate): There was a Geoffrey de Gastinois, Count of Nantes, d. 1157 (as far as I know without issue), son of Geoffrey Plantagenet of Anjou & the Empress Maud (daughter of Henry I). There was also a much earlier pre-conquest Count named Geoffrey de Gastinois, d. 1 Apr 1046.

    These assumptions are far from proven, but have enough support that I will put them in my lineage until more evidence surfaces, either to prove or disprove my assumptions.

    "At Domesday in 1086 two manors are listed at Tixall [2 miles from Stafford, Staffs], one worth 10s belonging to Earl Roger, and another worth 30s belonging to Robert of Stafford. In 1166/7, Geoffrey De Wasteneys, younger son of Geoffrey de Gastinois who held land at Colton, held Tixall and Broncote.

       Tixall remained with the De Wasteney family until sometime between 1435 and 1468, when Rose de Wasteney married John Merston and sold Tixall to Sir Thomas Littleton."
