    BARONY of ATON (I) 1371

    SIR WILLIAM ATON, of Malton, Ayton, &C., son and heir born about 1299. He was summoned to a Council, io October 1359, and to Parliament 8 January I370/1, by writs directed Willelmo de Aton, by which latter summons he may be held to have become LORD ATON. He was Sheriff of co. York 27 November 1368-70 and 12 December 1372-73. On 22 February 1376/7 he obtained an exemption for life from being put on assizes, juries &C., and from being made a justice of the peace, mayor, Sheriff, &C.

    He married, before January 1326/7, Isabel, daughter of Sir Henry PERCY [2nd LORD PERCY], by Idoine, daughter of Sir Robert CLIFFORD [1st LORD CLIFFORD]. She died between 13 Sep 1349 and 25 May 1368. He died s.p.m.s. between 29 Sep 1388 and March 1388/9.

    He left 3 daughters and coheirs. (1) Anastasia, wife of Sir Edward St. John. He died 7 March 1388/9 (2) Katherine, 2nd wife of Sir Ralph Eure, of Witton Castle, Co. Durham. He died 10 March 1421/2. (3) Elizabeth, formerly wife of Sir Williaim Playce, but then wife of Sir John Conyers, of Sockburn, co. Durham, who died shortly before 6 March 1395/6.) She died shortly before 8 May 1402. They made partition of their inheritance, 22 July 1389, and among their representatives any hereditary Barony, that may be held to have existed, is in abeyance.     William de Aton, 2nd Baron Aton, was summoned to parliament on 8 January, 1371. His lordship m. in 1340 Isabel, dau. of Henry, 3rd Lord Percy, by whom (who was dead in 1368) he had an only son, William, who died vita patris, and three daus., his co-heiresses, namely--Anastasia, m. to Sir Edward de St. John, and left a dau. and heiress, Margaret de St. John, who m. Thomas de Bromflete, king's butler, temp. Richard II; Katherine, m. to Sir Ralph de Eure; Elizabeth, m. 1st to Sir William Playtz, and 2ndly, to John Conyers, Esq., of Sokebourne, co. Durham.

    William, Lord Aton, was engaged in the French wars of King Edward III. He was sheriff of Yorkshire in the 42nd of that monarch [1373], and governor of the Castle of York, and again in the 43rd and 46th [1370 and 1373] of the same reign. At his lordship's decease his estates were divided amongst his daughters, and the Barony fell into abeyance, as it still continues.
