  • ID: I22314
  • Name: Mary widow of Mr. HORTON 1
  • Sex: F
  • Birth: ABT 1619 in England
  • Death: AFT 28 MAY 1665 in Mendon, Worcester, MA 2
  • Event: Bullet IMMIGRANT
  • Note:
He [Job Tyler] married Mary _____. It has been thought by one of the descendants of Job engaged in research that she may have been a widow Horton, but the proof of this statement has not been forthcoming. She was dismissed to the church in "Mendham" [Menon] from the church in Roxbury on the 28th day of the third month (May), 1665. Her birth and death are unrecorded so far as present research has gone. I sent the following query to the Tyler surname mailing list on
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------

My question now regards Mary Horton's ancestry. Everything I see on the internet states that she was the daughter of Thomas Horton and Mary Eddy. Some have Thomas Horton's dates as c. 1596 to c. 1640. I found Mary Eddy's supposed father John Eddy in my CD version of "The Great Migration Begins" (a very well researched book) and it states that John's daughter Mary did marry a "Thomas Orton"; but Mary was not born until shortly before 10 Mar 1625/6 (baptism) and did not marry Thomas until "before 1648", when their 1st child was born in Charlestown 27 Aug 1648. I believe that, given birth/marriage dates such as TGMB states, Mary Eddy, daughter of John Eddy is not likely to be the mother of Mary Horton, whom I have as born c. 1619 and d. 28 May 1665, with a son Hopestill Tyler b. c. 28 Jan 1645/6. Mary definitely did not marry a Thomas Horton/Orton 1596-1640 because he would have been dead 8 years before the birth of their 1st child.

Does anyone have any light to shed on my quandry? Did I just get the wrong information from LDS/World Connect?

I received the following two responses:

You'll likely hear from many, many people on this one! So many of us wanted to fall for Job marrying Mary Horton and to have her ancestry at hand.

Vital Records say that Job married the widow Horton. In most of the LDS files and those scattered about the internet the dates and locations just don't match on much of the information. The truth is that no one to date has discovered just who this widow Horton was and we have to be content, for the time being, to have her as just Mary.

You have it right. There is nothing to prove that Job's wife was named Mary Horton. Mary certainly, but Horton is merely speculation. I have looked at a good deal of evidence and everything indicates Horton was not Mary's surname. Job had a son Moses, for example born before Hopestill, and the dates just don't match. Still, many people still assert that is the case. I just can not figure.

Good luck with your Tyler research. Let me know if I can help out. I used the published genealogy that you are buying as a starting place and so far have added over 800 Tylers who do not appear there and have added information on another 1500 who do appear.
