    Dear John ~

Thank you for your good post. It's interesting that you've stressed the importance of the given name, Iseult. As it turns out, the Grey family of Wilton had another female member of the family named Iseult who has been overlooked by most sources. She isn't mentioned in your chart below either.

My research shows that John de Grey, 2nd Lord Grey of Wilton (son of Reynold de Grey, Knt., and his wife, Maud de Longchamp), was born about 1268 (aged 40 at his father's death in 1308). He married (1st) Anne de Ferrers, and (2nd) Maud Basset. By one of these wives, John de Grey had a daughter named Iseult, who married _____ Saint Pierre. Iseult Saint Pierre is mentioned by name in a papal petition dated 1343, being called aunt by John de Grey, Knt., son of her brother, Roger [Reference: Cal. Papal Registers: Petitions 1 (1896): 33]. She was a widow in 1343. Iseult Saint Pierre would thus be a first cousin to Iseult de Mortimer, wife of Hugh de Audley. Both women would presumably have obtained their given name from their common ancestress, Iseult Bardolf, wife of Henry de Grey, as shown in your chart below. Iseult Bardolf, by the way, appears to have Carolingian ancestry.

As for Iseult Saint Pierre, she appears to be the Iseult mentioned in the visitation pedigrees for that family as the wife of one of the Saint Pierre men in the pedigree. If so, then she would have several colonial immigrants who descend from her, one of them being Olive Welby. Perhaps someone familiar with the Saint Pierre family can provide better particulars of this woman.

In this case, the newsgroup may be getting a two-for-one, as no one has previously known the identity of Iseult de Mortimer's mother and no one has connected Iseult Saint Pierre with any American colonists. Thanks, John, for bringing the matter of the name Iseult to my attention.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Note: I have John de Grey b. bef 1258, based on transactions; plus "aged 40 [and more] at his father's death" is often applied to people nearer fifty, as age 40 was considered quite old. Also note that John 2nd Lord Grey of Wilton was later shown to have only married once (not twice as above).

Presumably this would be Iseult/Isolda (liv. 5 Edw 2 and 3 Edw 3), wife of Urian St. Pierre of Malpas, Cheshire (liv. 12 Edw. I). Source: Ormerod II:596 and 598. Her ancestry is not identified.
