    BARONY OF GRAY [SCT] (I)

    ANDREW GRAY, son and heir of Sir Andrew G., of Broxmouth, co. Roxburgh, by his 1st wife, Janet, daughter and heir of Sir Roger MORTIMER, of Foulis, co. Perth, was born about 1390; was (v.p.) a hostage for James I in 1424, returning from England in 1427; was in 1436 one of the knights who accompanied Margaret of Scotland into France, on her marriage with Louis, afterwards Louis X1 of France; succeeded his father about 1440. He was created a Lord of Parliament (LORD GRAY [SCT], about 1445, at some date before 5 July in that year. He was a Commissioner to England 1449 and 1451; Master of the Household to James II 1452; Warden of the Marches 1459.

    He married (contract dated at Foulis 31 August 1418) Elizabeth, 1st daughter of Sir John WEMYSS, of Wemyss and Rires. He died late in 1469. His widow was living 15 May 1470. [Complete Peerage VI:98-99, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    Sir Andrew built St. Marnoch church in Fowlis Easter (known then as Foulis) in 1453 on the site of an earlier church.
