I have thought for quite a while that the Bethune family was descended from the French. I find Kirk Larson, World Connect db=:2640299, has a pedigree linking the Scottish to French families. Thus I am following Kirk's lines, although Kirk states that Robert was "Earl of Fife" from 1353-1377 (two years after Kirk said he died), which is certainly at odds with 'The Complete Peerage', which makes no mention of Robert as such an Earl. CP states that from 1353 to 1371 the Earl of Fife was held by Isabel or Elizabeth Countess of Fife, daughter of Duncan MacDuff, 10th Earl of Fife, along with her 4 husbands (1) William Ramsay (Earl of Fife), dsp. aft 1360. (2) Walter Stewart (Earl of Fife), dsp. aft 1362. (3) Thomas Byset (Earl of Fife), dsp. bef 1365. (4) John de Dunbar (Earl of Fife), dsp. bef 1371. Finally in 1371 she resigned the Earldom of Fife in favor of her 2nd husband's brother Robert Stewart, Earl of Menteith, and Isabel, no longer Countess of Fife, dsp. soon after 12 Aug 1389.
