Name: John BETHUNE , of Holkettle & Balfour 1 2
ALIA: John /Beaton/, 4th of Balfour
Birth: ABT 1418 in Holkettle, Fifeshire, Scotland 1
Death: 1499 in Balfour, Fifeshire, Scotland 1
Frank Young has John as son of James Bethune, who was son of the Frenchman, Jean II de Bethune by Isabeau d'Estouteville. I don't think that this ancestry explains the acquisition of Balfour and Holkettle, as the ancestry that I have for John does. I do believe that the Bethune family of Scotland is descended from the family in France, but at a much earlier date than Frank Young's pedigree indicates (say, Robert Bethune, b. 1320, who is in my files, may have been a younger son of Guillaume IV de Bethune by Marie de Roye). (Frank is reporting on a pedigree researched by K. Larson, not a published source]
Apparently Kirk Larson has changed his pedigree a bit, because his World Connect db=:2642099, dated 23 Sep 2003, now has John's wife as Janet Hay, mother of Robert Bethune. There is no mention of Katherine Stirling (or of a son John for that matter). But this John is obviously the same John Bethune, because they have the same ancestry. I will keep Katherine Stirling as an alternate wife, but add Janet Hay as a wife of John and mother of John; of course it could be that Katherine was a first wife (and possibly mother of John) while Janet was a second wife (and mother of Robert).
Kirk has also apparently changed his pedigree in regards to my first statements above, with the connection to the French Bethune family occuring with Robert Bethune's father.
