    ---------------------

BARONY OF HAMILTON [SCT] (I) 1445

JAMES HAMILTON, son and heir of Sir James Hamilton, of Cadyow [Cadzow], co. Lanark, by Janet, sister of James, 1st LORD LIVINGSTON [SCT], and daughter of Sir Alexander LIVINGSTON, of Calendar, was born probably about 1415; mentioned in a charter 18 April 1426, his father being alive; was in 1440 P.C. to James II. He was created, by royal charter, 28 June or 3 July 1445, an "hereditary Lord of our Parliament" as LORD HAMILTON [SCT], all his lordships and baronies being erected into the Lordship of Hamilton. He appears to have joined the Douglas insurrection in March 1455, but then changed sides, and was rewarded with the grant of the hereditary Shrievalty of Lanarkshire, 1 July 1455, and with other grants in August and October 1457. He was on various embassies to England from 1461 to 1472.

He married, 1stly (dispensation 25 February 1440/1), Eupheme, widow of Archibald, 5th EARL OF DOUGLAS [SCT], 1st daughter of Sir Patrick GRAHAM, by Eupheme, suo jure COUNTESS OF STRATHERNE [SCT]. She died s.p.m., in 1468, between 1 August and 1 November. He married, 2ndly, certainly before April 1474, and probably in February or March 1473/4, the dispensation from the Pope (legitimatising the two children already born) not being obtained till 25 April 1476, the Lady Mary STEWART, formerly wife of Thomas (BOYD), EARL OF ARRAN [SCT], sister of the then reigning JAMES III, being daughter of JAMES II, by Mary, daughter of Arnold, DUKE OF GUELDRES. He died 6 November 1479. His widow, the Princess, who was born [very shortly] before 16 May 1452 (a), died about May 1488. [Complete Peerage VI:254-6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]

    (a) Her brother James III was b. 10 Jul 1451, another child was b. and d. 19 May 1450, the marriage of the parents having taken place 3 July 1449.

    ---------------------

Note: Magna Charta Sureties and CP VI:254 give a birth date for James of "ca. 1415". I think this is too early, given his parents' marriage of 1422, his own marriage dates, etc. In fact CP I:220 had a statement that James was about 70 when he married Mary of Scotland in 1468 (making him b. about 1398!), but this statement was retracted by XIV:36, and the marriage was change to "bef. Apr 1474". Obviously CP has some conflicting information on this line, however CP XIV did not correct the "about 1215" statement for his birth date.
