Julia Keay, published by Harper Collins,1994:

"Ferniehurst Castle- near Jedburgh, Roxburghshire. On the east bank of the Jed Water, about 2 miles above the town of Jedburgh, Ferniehurst Castle was rebuilt in 1598 from the ruins of its predecessor, which like so many border towns, had a turbulent history. The ancient stronghold of the Kerr family, it was captured by the Earl of Surrey in 1523, retaken by Sir John Kerr in 1549, with the aid of French mercenaries stationed in the burgh, sheltered the Earl of Westmorland from the wrath of Queen Elizabeth I in 1569 and was demolished by the Earl of Sussex in 1570. Its replacement (1598) is a handsome L-plan tower house with an unusually long main block, a circular stair tower, magnificent first floor great hall and a barrel vaulted kitchen. Still in the Kerr family , it was in use as a youth hostel, before being restored and modernized by the Marquis of Lothian."
