    EARLDOM of ANGUS (SCT) (XVII, 1) 1389

    George Douglas, Earl of Angus, illegitimate son of William Douglas, 1st Earl of Douglas, by Margaret, suo jure Countess of Angus, was b. not later than 1378. On 9 Apr 1389, by the resignation of his mother, the said Countess, he received a grant of the Earldom of Angus to himself and the heirs of his body, with remainder to Elizabeth, wife of Sir Alexander Hamilton, of Innerwick (younest and only sister of the said Countess), and the heirs of their bodies.

    He m., contract dated 24 May 1397, the Lady Mary Stewart, 2nd daughter of Robert III, by Annabel, daughter of Sir John Drummond, of Stobhall. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Homildon Hill, and d. of the pestilence in England, in the same year, 1402. His widow m. 2ndly, 1404, Sir James Kennedy the younger, of Dunure. He was killed vp. before 8 Nov 1408. In July 1409 his widow had Papal dispensation to m. (as his 2nd wife) Sir William Cunningham, but there is no clear evidence that the marriage ever took place. He d. between 7 Aug 1413 and Dec 1415. She m. 3rdly (as his 2nd wife) 13 Nov 1413, Sir William Graham, grandfather of Patrick, 1st Lord Graham, who d. 1424. She m. 4thly, 1425, Sir William Edmonstone, of Duntreath. She was living 1458, having had issue by all four husbands, and was buried with her last husband, in the Church of Strathblane.     Tantallon Castle is located 27 miles East of Ediburgh, near North Berwick on A198. The Castle was built in the mid 14th century, most likely by William, 1st Earl of Douglas. After William's death, the castle became the possession of George Douglas, 1st Earl of Angus, William's illegitimate son, by Margaret, Countess of Angus and Mar, and the progenitor of the Red Douglases.     George was the illegitimate son of William, Earl of Douglas by his first cousin, the Countess of Angus and Mar. He inherited his mother's title and possessions in 1389 making him the 1st Earl of Angus. George married Princess Mary Stewart, daughter of King Robert III, in 1397.
