    -------------------------

    EARLDOM OF ORKNEY [SCT] (II)

HENRY (SINCLAIR), EARL OF ORKNEY [SCT], 1st son and heir, succeeded his father. In 1402 he was captured at the battle of Homildon Hill; but he was probably freed before 24 January 1403/4. In March 1405/6 he sailed for France with Prince James, who had been committed to his care by Robert II; but they were captured at sea on 22 March by men of Yarmouth and Cley (Norfolk), taken to Henry IV and sent to the Tower. He was still a prisoner at the end of 1407. In 1409 he was engaged in negotiations for the release of James, now King. In 1412 he went to France with the Earl of Douglas [SCT]. He was still living 23 November1419.

He married, before 17 November 1407, Jill, daughter and heir of Sir William DOUGLAS, of Nithsdale, by Jill, daughter of ROBERT II, King of Scotland. He died probably 1 February 1420/1, of influenza. His widow married, 2ndly, after 29 April 1422, Alexander STEWART, 3rd son of Murdoch, 2nd Duke of ALBANY [SCT], with whom he was beheaded at Stirling, 25 March 1425. She survived him, and was living in 1438. [Complete Peerage X:95-6, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
