From ["The Ancestry of Rev Henry Whitfield & his Wife Dorothy Sheafe", by John Brooks Threlfall] also [Periodical: "Ancestry of the Children of John Brooks Threlfall", privately printed 1970]:

He is listed as a citizen and stockfishmonger. He owned the brew-house "The Lamp on the Hoop"

He was a stock fishmonger of London (a fish dealer and a member of the guild). He and his parents apparently came from Brampton in Huntingdonshire, for he left a bequest to the parish church there in his will. It was at about this time that family names were being assumed. His name, then, would be a place name derived from this parish of his family's origin.

"16 July 1375 - Thomas Keys of Stowe Saint Edward has appointed William Brampton, citizen and stockfishmonger, to be his attorney in a suit against Ludovic Lombord (Husting Roll 103:124)."

"16 March 1Richard II (1377/8), Walter Sibble, William Kelshulle, William Bramptone, John Poignaunt, Clement Lavender, Nicholas Rameseye, John Ridere, and Richard Style, fishmongers, sworn before the mayor to see that no machines stand in the Thames and Medway to the destruction of small fish, taking for their labour half of the forfeiture. (Letter-Book H:87)"

"16 July 1378 - William Brampton and 37 other citizens were elected by the Mayor and Commonalty to supervise the City's liberties, and to act therein as to them may seem more expedient. (Letter-Book H:94)"
